The Other (Better) Half

Nikon D700, Nikkor AF-S VR 105mm 1:2.8 G Micro
ISO 3200, 1/60s @ f/8

I got marched outside with the camera tonight because apparently I haven't taken a shot of the wife in a while. So here she is with her new hairdo. In color and a B&W tone I like. And yes, camera geeks, that's ISO 3200. I still can't believe this camera is for real. ISO 3200 looks like my D80 did at ISO 200. Crazy.

Roemer-Foster Update, September 28

Made lots of progress today - spent the whole day on it, actually! Just about finished - I should be ready to print hopefully next week.

By The Light Of The Moon.

Waterton Lake, Alberta.
Nikon D700, Nikkor AF 50mm 1:1.8
ISO200, f/16 for 2 minutes.

This shot exemplifies what the astronomical price of the D700 buys you. A two-minute exposure, lit only by the light of the half-moon, and there is not a hint of noise in the image. None. Nada. Zero. Absolutely amazing. Worth every penny.

A View From The Top

Bear's Hump, Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta (click on image to see larger).

Nikon D700, Sigma 24-70mm 1:2.8 EX DG @ 24mm
Manual mode, ISO 200, f/8, 1/500 seconds. 5 images, stitched together via Photomerge in Photoshop CS4. Full size image is 8216 x 3481 pixels.

Birthday Camping Trip, in B&W (part 1)

A day in our life... a birthday (mine) camping trip (cheating - an RV trailer!) in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta. I grew up near here and it's a favorite spot. These are some black & whites that captured the day. More to come - color, etc. This was my first chance to give my new Nikon D700 a workout, and it certainly did not disappoint.

New Website!

So it's now live... www.threecowsphotography.com (or www.threecowsphotography.ca - I took them both). This blog is where i will continue to update things first. The website is more for an introduction for people who just want to look around at some of my work. Or for people who incredibly bored. Or both. It's pretty low key and not at all flashy. Just like me.

that's all!

Roemer-Foster Update - September 17

Done the base JPEG conversions - I have around 200 shots to work with. Now on to black & whites and finding some specific portraits to play with!

Roemer-Foster Update (Sept 14/09)

Through the ceremony, making JPEGS out of RAW files. It's a little slow, but it gets each base image just how I like it. More to come, naturally!

Next Up: The Roemer-Foster Wedding!

Round one of "culling" is done... down from about 1400 images to around 250. That will whittle down to about 150-200 (i hope!) when i'm done.

Free Photoshop Action #4

This simple action makes an edge burn as seen above. I showed it in a black & white image to show it's one shortcoming - where there is pure white in the image edge, you won't get a burn. The image works best with edge shades other than pure white or pure black. There are two separate actions inside the set, one for use with a single layer image, and one for use with a multi-layer image. The burn looks different for every image and can be customized even further by changing the size (default is 100 pixels wide, max 250 px) or by modifying the curve, which changes the look and shape of the burn.
I've got a couple more actions i'll upload in the near future as well.
Download this action here, and rock on!

Livingston, Montana (July, 2009)

Nikon D80, AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G IF DX
Gradient Map Burn action.

I love Montana... it's one of my favorite places on earth. In fact I'd be quite happy to move there were it possible/feasable. More pix to come.

Finishing things off with one of my favorite shots of the entire day. I'm all done editing - it's off to the printers!
